WD40

The WD-40 is one of my favorite flies for fishing rivers and lakes where there is a good population of small baetis and midges. It can be tied in many different colors and will do a great job at mimicking midge and baetis pupa. Some of my favorite colors are all black, or black with a gray abdomen, Brown with either gray or brown abdomen, Olive with gray or brown abdomen, and gray with black abdomen. But you can tie them in any color combo you want.

These were originally tied by Mark Engler and he used wood duck feathers, Hence the name WD-40 for Wood Duck. However wood duck tend to be a bit expensive. The barring on these feathers are more pronounced and finer, so it does look a bit better. However, due to the cost, many people have started tying them with mallard flank died to the wood duck color instead. It's not a perfect replacement but it does the job just fine and I dont think the fish really care. Also I believe his original was olive body with brown rabbit fur dubbing. I personally however find that this really fine dubbing works better, and allows me to get a more neat and even abdomen on the fly. But if you want to go original, you can use the wood duck feather, olive thread and brown rabbit fur dubbing. I believe he also tied it on a straight nymph hook, but many tend to tie it on the curved hooks now, which I also like better. It's all up to you though.

I also like to have a very thin body on the fly with a pronounced abdomen. I allow the natural taper in the feather fibers to create the taper for me. However some people do add a bit more taper to this fly by wrapping up and down the body a few times until they get a thicker body. Up to you on how you want to tie this. But for me, these skinny little bodies tend to represent the baetis and midge pupa a little better.

If you haven't already, you really should check out my sponsor Risen Fly. Their fly rods and reels are some of the best in the industry, yet their prices are also some of the lowest. They also have amazing deals on very high quality hooks and beads. Not only are their prices already amazing, but I was able to negotiate a discount for you all. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout and you will get 15% off your first order with them.

Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
