Glenn's Biography

I started fly tying shortly after going with a friend whose father had arranged for us to spend a day with a co-worker of his who fly-fished. It was early May and Hendrickson's were hatching on his local stream. He showed us the book "Selective Trout " and then he tied a gold ribbed hare's ear wet fly. Watching him fish that fly and seeing the trout that he landed was as magical a moment as I have ever seen.

Now it is over four decades later and fly tying has given me a lifetime of memories I have been fortunate enough to demonstrate at the Dutch Fly Fair in Holland, the Chatsworth Angling fair in England as well as numerous FFF national conclaves. It is the history of fly tying that has always interested me. I enjoy tying and reproducing the flies of yesterday. I can't help but wonder what the originator was thinking as he designed his patterns. For the streamer 365 project I chose to reproduce as closely as possible the flies of Ora Smith that were featured in "Trolling Flies for Trout and Salmon" by Dick Stewart and Bob Leeman. I love to tie steelhead and salmon flies. When I became involved in this project I couldn't help but think how fortunate I was to be included with so many of the finest streamer tiers working in the world today. I am again fortunate to call so many of them friends but what I would have given to have a streamer 365 reference when I started! I hope you enjoy tying all of the streamers to be featured.

Oh, and when I am not fly tying then I am usually sitting comfortably in my favorite easy chair reading a good book of fishing stories.

Glenn, can I get you to produce a Winnipesaukee Queen and a Canopache for me? I'm looking to box frame them for a gift for my father in law who owns the Canopache Lodge in Wolfeboro, NH

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
