I have seen numerous fly fishers that store/put their reel in a separate cupboard when they come home, hang the fly vest on another hook and the rod with the other rods.
And even a lanyard with the nippers, forceps and floatant on another hook.
When they go fishing the grab fly vest, the rod, the lanyard and the reel. BUT SOMETIMES they grab the wrong reel or they even forget the reel.
Why don’t you put your fly reel on the inside pocket of your fly vest, and hook your lanyard (if you use one) semi-permanent on your fly vest?
I store my fly reel permanently in a pocket of my fly vest. So when I go fishing, I grab my vest and rod and I have everything.
When finished fishing, I take my reel off the rod and immediately put the reel in the inside pocket of my fly vest.
No worries about "where did I put my reel?" is it on the car roof?
