March Brown Zonker

A zonker interpretation of the classic March Brown. This fly should do well for both sea run browns, and stream base brownies and bass.

Easy
  1. Start the thread in the rear of the hook shank.
  2. Tie in the rib. If using tying thread, double or quadruple the thread.
  3. Dub the body with hare's wool, leaving a bit of space for hackle and head.
  4. Cut a zonker strip, the skin being about 1½ shank lengths.
  5. Cut the front end of the skin to a triangle shape for easier tie-in.
  6. Tie it in in front of the body, leaving space for hackle and head.
  7. Pull to the rear, separate hairs and secure it with the rib.
  8. Wrap the rib forwards in 4-5 open turns, each time separating the hairs on the strip and securing it to the body.
  9. Tie down the rib and trim surplus.
  10. Select a hackle, barb length about ½ shank length.
  11. Tie in tip first, curved side forward.
  12. Wrap the hackle, stroking back the fibers to create a classic wet fly hackle.
  13. Tie down the hackle and cut off the stem as close to the fly as possible.
  14. Form a head, whip finish and varnish.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
